Koinonia- fellowship- Acts 2:42

One week my youth Minister, Chad Barnes, assigned us some home work. we were supossed to do a word study on the word Koinonia which appeared in Acts 2:42. The first step was to use a Bible dictionary and come up with a first definiton. Then we were to look up some Bible verses with the same word in it and come up with a second definition. Then we were to look at theologians veiws of what the word means and come up with our final definition. It was a great learning experience and i loved doing it! Here is mine:

1. A communion or gathering of people who hold similar beliefs.
(communion, association, community)
2. a communion between believers in order to encourage and suffer along side (compassion) of each other in unity.
(1 Corinthians 1:19, 2 Corinthians 6:14, 2 Corinthians 13:14, Galations 2:9, Philipinas 2:1, Philipians 3:10, Philemon 1:6, 1 John 1:3-places where the same word 'Koinonia' reoccures)
3. -the breaking of bread and prayer- J. B. Polhill
-holding of a common meal- I. H. Marshall
-seek to actively partner with fellow believers and guard against doing so with unbelievers- Bob Deffinbaugh
-sharing of things in common (meaning Jesus Christ)- John Stevenson
-When people who have a similar passion (Jesus Christ) are drawn together and cannot stay apart. When peopl use their money to help those in need- Martin Lloyd Jones

Definition of Koinonia: When people, who share a common view of Jesus Christ, gather together for the breaking of bread, prayer, and encouragement. Those who participate in this communion share a similar passion for Jesus Christ which draws them together making it hard for them to stay apart. They are compassionate towards one another and not only feel for one another but also give money to help the one in need.
